Hazards of Trailer Use

Using trailers on the worksite or on the road involves several risks if proper procedures aren't followed. Improper loading, faulty connections, and poor inspections can all lead to serious accidents, injuries, and equipment loss.

Common Trailer Safety Issues

  • Incorrect weight distribution or overloading.
  • Loose or damaged hitch components.
  • Inadequate braking systems or lighting.
  • Failure to secure loads properly with straps or chains.

Safe Trailer Operation Tips

  • Always inspect the trailer before use (tires, brakes, lights, hitch).
  • Ensure the load is evenly distributed and properly secured.
  • Use the correct ball size and locking mechanism for the hitch.
  • Perform a walk-around inspection after loading and before moving.
  • Drive cautiously, allowing for the trailer’s added length and weight.

Post-Use and Maintenance

  • Check for wear or damage after each use.
  • Clean debris and materials left inside or on the trailer.
  • Report mechanical issues immediately.
  • Store trailers in designated areas and chock wheels if needed.

At GamaSafety, every trailer movement should begin and end with safety. A few minutes spent inspecting and preparing your trailer can prevent costly and dangerous incidents on the jobsite or the road.
