Be careful not to tie off to an anchor in such a way that, if you fall, you could swing into an obstruction. This is called a swing-fall hazard. A swing fall can generate significant impact force, causing serious injuries similar to or even worse than hitting the ground directly.
When working at height, always position your anchor point directly above you whenever possible. The further your anchor is from your vertical working position, the greater the arc of your fall and the higher the chance of striking a wall, beam, equipment, or other hazards.
After a Fall
After a fall, immediately remove from service all equipment used to arrest the fall. This includes harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, and connectors. You cannot use this equipment again until it has been inspected and approved by one of the following:
- The manufacturer
- An approved agent
- A professional engineer
Additional Safety Tips
- Inspect your anchor point to ensure it is rated for fall arrest and positioned to minimize swing distance.
- Use shorter lanyards or self-retracting lifelines to reduce potential swing distance.
- Be aware of surrounding hazards such as scaffolding, steel structures, and sharp edges that could be struck during a swing fall.
- Include swing-fall hazard awareness in pre-job safety meetings and fall protection training.
- Never bypass or adjust fall protection systems in a way that increases lateral movement away from the anchor point.
At Gama Safety, we emphasize that preventing swing-fall hazards is just as critical as preventing vertical falls. By planning anchor points, using the right equipment, and staying alert, you can significantly reduce the risk of injury when working at heights.
Swing-fall hazards can be deadly if ignored. Always choose safe anchor points, minimize lateral movement, and inspect your fall arrest equipment after any incident to maintain a safe work environment at Gama Safety.
