Understanding UV Exposure
Outdoor workers are regularly exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Prolonged exposure can cause skin cancer, heat exhaustion, sunburn, and eye damage. Sun protection is critical to staying safe on the job, especially in spring and summer months.
Health Hazards from UV Exposure
- Skin cancer, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma.
- Sunburns that increase the risk of long-term damage.
- Heat exhaustion or heatstroke due to prolonged heat exposure.
- Eye conditions like cataracts and UV-related burns.
Protection Strategies
- Wear wide-brimmed hard hats or hats with neck flaps.
- Use UV-rated sunglasses with side shields.
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every 2 hours.
- Wear lightweight, long-sleeved, breathable clothing.
- Schedule breaks in shaded areas and stay hydrated.
Additional Best Practices
- Check the UV index daily—limit exposure during peak hours (10am–4pm).
- Replace sunscreen after sweating or towel-drying.
- Train new workers on signs of heat stress and proper UV protection.
At GamaSafety, sun safety is part of every outdoor job. Proper UV protection today prevents serious health risks tomorrow. Stay covered, stay cool, and stay aware.
