What is Silica?

Silica, or crystalline silica, is a common mineral found in materials like concrete, brick, stone, and sand. When these materials are cut, ground, or drilled, fine silica dust becomes airborne. Inhaling it over time can cause serious and permanent health damage.

Health Hazards of Silica Dust

  • Silicosis – a disabling, irreversible lung disease caused by inhaled dust.
  • Increased risk of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Kidney disease from long-term exposure.
  • Permanent respiratory damage even at low levels over long periods.

Prevention and Protection

  • Use water or ventilation systems to suppress dust at the source.
  • Wear proper respiratory protection (e.g., N95 or higher-rated masks).
  • Follow jobsite air monitoring and exposure control plans.
  • Use tools with HEPA filters and dust collection attachments.

Safe Work Practices

  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke in areas with silica dust exposure.
  • Clean clothes with a vacuum—never dry brush or shake.
  • Report damaged equipment or failed ventilation systems immediately.
  • Attend all required fit testing and silica hazard training.

At GamaSafety, we take silica seriously. With the right controls and protection, workers can stay safe from this invisible but deadly hazard. Prevention today protects your lungs for life.
