The Strain of Shoveling
Whether it's snow, gravel, or soil, shoveling can put serious stress on the back, shoulders, and arms. If done improperly or repetitively without breaks, it can lead to strains, pulled muscles, or even long-term injury. Prevention begins with awareness and body mechanics.
Common Shoveling Injuries
- Lower back pain from twisting or bending.
- Shoulder and neck strain from repetitive lifting.
- Wrist and hand soreness from gripping and impact.
- Fatigue-related slips, trips, or overexertion.
Preventive Techniques
- Warm up with light stretching before shoveling.
- Use ergonomic shovels with curved handles if available.
- Keep the shovel close to your body to reduce leverage stress.
- Push the material when possible instead of lifting.
- Lift small loads and avoid twisting your spine when dumping.
Breaks and Body Care
- Take short breaks every 15–20 minutes to rest muscles.
- Hydrate and avoid overexertion, especially in cold weather.
- Apply ice or heat to sore muscles if discomfort appears.
- Report any pain or injury to your supervisor immediately.
At GamaSafety, we encourage smart shoveling habits. Protecting your body today means fewer injuries, better productivity, and long-term health tomorrow.
