A shock absorber slows and cushions a fall, reducing the forces exerted on the body when the fall is stopped. Personal shock absorbers are often made of "tear webbing." In the event of a fall, specific stitch patterns in the webbing absorb the force of impact by progressively tearing apart, reducing the shock transmitted to the user.
WARNING: The shock absorber may increase the length of the lanyard by as much as 1.2 m (4 ft.) during a fall. This means you must carefully calculate the total fall clearance required for your personal fall protection system.
Safe Use Guidelines
- Refer to the label on the shock-absorbing unit to determine the maximum elongation.
- Always allow for extra fall distance when including a shock absorber in your system.
- Ensure the shock absorber meets CSA Standard Z259.11, as this is acceptable to WorkSafeBC.
- Replace the unit if it has been deployed during a fall or shows any sign of wear or damage.
Carabiners
A carabiner is an oblong-shaped connecting device used to attach different components of a personal fall protection system. Carabiners that meet the requirements of CSA Standard Z259.12 are acceptable to WorkSafeBC.
When selecting and using a carabiner, ensure it:
- Has gates that are both self-closing and self-locking.
- Has a breaking strength of at least 22 kN (5,000 lb.).
- Has the manufacturer's identity and load capacity clearly marked on it.
Inspection Before Use
Inspect your carabiner before each use. Make sure it is free of damage, deformities, or excessive wear. Any component showing signs of malfunction should be removed from service immediately.
At Gama Safety, we emphasize that the proper selection, inspection, and use of personal shock absorbers and carabiners are critical in preventing injuries when working at heights.
Personal shock absorbers and properly rated carabiners are vital components of a fall protection system. At Gama Safety, we ensure workers are trained to select, use, and maintain this equipment to meet the highest safety standards.
