What Is a Near Miss?
A near miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury or damage—but had the potential to do so. Reporting near misses is one of the most proactive ways to improve workplace safety and prevent future incidents.
Examples of Near Misses
- A falling object narrowly missing a worker.
- A forklift reversing into an unmarked area without incident.
- Slipping on a spill but catching yourself before falling.
- Tools or equipment malfunctioning but not causing harm.
Why Reporting Matters
- Helps identify hazards before they cause harm.
- Provides valuable insight into process or equipment failures.
- Reinforces a culture of accountability and prevention.
- Leads to corrective actions that improve safety for everyone.
How to Report a Near Miss
- Report it immediately to your supervisor or safety representative.
- Fill out the appropriate incident or near miss form.
- Describe what happened, where, and how it could have caused harm.
- Suggest preventive measures if possible.
At GamaSafety, we treat near misses as learning opportunities—not failures. Every report makes the worksite smarter, safer, and more prepared for the unexpected.
