The Importance of 3-Point Contact

Many injuries on job sites occur when workers mount or dismount equipment incorrectly. Slips, trips, and falls are common when steps are missed, handholds are ignored, or wet or muddy boots are involved. Using proper techniques can prevent these avoidable injuries.

Common Hazards

  • Jumping from equipment instead of climbing down.
  • Slippery or broken steps and handholds.
  • Carrying tools or materials while climbing.
  • Wearing loose or muddy footwear.

Best Practices for Safety

  • Use the “3-point contact” rule: always have two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand in contact.
  • Face the equipment while climbing up or down.
  • Clean mud, grease, or snow off steps before use.
  • Check that steps, ladders, and rails are in good condition.
  • Never carry items while mounting or dismounting—use tool belts or pass items separately.

If You Lose Your Grip

  • Don't try to "catch yourself" with one hand—stay calm and use your body to stabilize.
  • If you slip, report any near misses or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Do not use equipment until all entry/exit points are safe.

At GamaSafety, we remind workers that getting on and off equipment safely is just as important as operating it. Injuries from simple dismounts can be long-lasting—use the right method every time.

Many injuries happen before a machine even moves. This GamaSafety guide reminds workers to use safe mounting and dismounting practices to prevent sprains, slips, and serious falls.
