The Risk of Improper Lifting

Improper lifting is one of the most common causes of workplace injuries, particularly back strains, hernias, and muscle damage. Learning and applying safe manual lifting techniques helps reduce risk and supports long-term health on the job.

Common Manual Lifting Hazards

  • Twisting or bending while lifting.
  • Lifting loads that are too heavy or unstable.
  • Carrying objects over long distances.
  • Failing to use team lifts or mechanical assistance.

Safe Lifting Techniques

  • Assess the load before lifting check size, weight, and stability.
  • Stand close with feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and lift with your legs.
  • Hold the load close to your body and avoid twisting.
  • Set the load down carefully using the same motion in reverse.

Additional Best Practices

  • Use mechanical aids (dollies, carts, hoists) when possible.
  • Request help for heavy or awkward items.
  • Take breaks to avoid fatigue and maintain good posture.
  • Report any pain or strain symptoms early.

At GamaSafety, proper lifting is more than a technique it’s a daily commitment. When workers protect their bodies, they protect their future. Lift smart, lift safe.
