Why Machine Guarding is Critical

Machines with moving parts can cause severe injuries if not properly guarded. Pinch points, rotating shafts, blades, and conveyors must be protected to prevent contact with workers during operation, maintenance, or cleaning.

Types of Machine Guards

  • Fixed guards: Permanent barriers that prevent access to hazardous areas.
  • Interlocked guards: Shut off power when the guard is removed or opened.
  • Adjustable guards: Can be manually positioned based on the task or material.
  • Self-adjusting guards: Move into place automatically during operation.

Safe Use Guidelines

  • Never bypass, remove, or modify guards unless authorized and trained to do so.
  • Report missing or damaged guards immediately to your supervisor.
  • Use lockout/tagout procedures before servicing guarded machinery.
  • Keep hands, clothing, and tools clear of moving parts at all times.

Training and Awareness

  • Know the location and function of all guards on your equipment.
  • Only operate machines after receiving proper training.
  • Stay alert when working around automated equipment or conveyors.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for the task.

At GamaSafety, we remind every worker that guarding saves hands, arms and lives. Never assume a machine is safe unless its guards are fully in place and functioning properly.
