What is Lockout/Tagout?
Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure used to ensure that machinery and equipment are properly shut off and cannot be started up again before maintenance or servicing is completed. It protects workers from unexpected energy releases.
When is LOTO Required?
- Before performing maintenance, cleaning, or repair work.
- When servicing equipment with hazardous energy sources (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic).
- During installation or disassembly of machines.
- When multiple workers are involved in servicing equipment.
Steps in a LOTO Procedure
- Notify affected employees and identify energy sources.
- Shut down the machine using normal procedures.
- Isolate all energy sources (e.g., disconnect power, close valves).
- Apply lockout devices and place tags with clear warnings.
- Release stored energy (bleed, drain, discharge).
- Verify isolation before starting any work.
Important Reminders
- Only the person who applied the lock can remove it.
- Tags must be legible and include name, date, and reason.
- Never bypass or remove a lockout/tagout device without authorization.
- All employees must be trained in LOTO procedures and responsibilities.
At GamaSafety, Lockout/Tagout is non-negotiable. It’s one of the most effective methods to prevent serious injury or death. Always follow LOTO procedures and never assume a machine is safe—prove it.
Lockout/Tagout saves lives. This GamaSafety session reminds every worker to isolate energy, lock it out, and verify before putting hands—or lives—at risk.
