What is a Job Hazard Analysis?

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is a safety tool used to break down a job into individual steps, identify potential hazards at each step, and determine the safest way to perform the task. It helps prevent injuries before they happen.

Steps in a JHA

  • Select the job or task to analyze (focus on higher-risk work).
  • Break the task down into basic steps.
  • Identify hazards associated with each step.
  • Determine safe procedures, PPE, and controls to reduce risk.
  • Document and review the JHA with the crew before starting work.

Common Hazards Identified in JHAs

  • Struck-by, caught-in, or pinch point hazards.
  • Slips, trips, and falls.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, or hazardous chemicals.
  • Improper lifting or awkward posture.
  • Electrical, mechanical, or pressurized energy sources.

Best Practices for Using JHAs

  • Involve workers who perform the task they know the risks best.
  • Update JHAs when tasks change or after incidents occur.
  • Keep JHAs accessible on site and use them during toolbox talks.
  • Reinforce hazard control measures with supervision and training.

At GamaSafety, JHAs are a cornerstone of risk prevention. When we plan ahead and identify hazards before we act, we reduce injuries and increase jobsite safety.
