Understanding Heat Stress
Heat stress occurs when the body can no longer regulate its temperature due to excessive heat exposure. It can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death if not addressed promptly. Outdoor workers are especially at risk during summer or in hot indoor environments.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Headache, dizziness, or confusion.
- Excessive sweating followed by dry skin.
- Muscle cramps or weakness.
- Nausea, vomiting, or rapid heartbeat.
- Loss of consciousness in extreme cases.
Prevention Measures
- Drink water frequently—even before you feel thirsty.
- Take regular breaks in shaded or cool areas.
- Wear light, breathable, and reflective clothing.
- Use fans, shade, and cooling vests when possible.
- Acclimatize gradually to working in high temperatures.
What To Do in Case of Heat Stress
- Move the affected person to a cooler environment immediately.
- Loosen clothing and apply cool, wet cloths to the skin.
- Offer water if the person is conscious and able to drink.
- Call emergency services if symptoms are severe or worsen.
- Do not leave the person alone—monitor until help arrives.
