What is Fit Testing?
Fit testing ensures that a respirator forms a proper seal against the user's face to provide effective protection. Without a good fit, even the best respirator may fail to keep out hazardous airborne particles or gases.
Types of Fit Testing
- Qualitative Fit Testing: Uses substances like saccharin or Bitrex to test if the wearer can taste or smell leakage.
- Quantitative Fit Testing: Uses machines to measure the actual amount of leakage into the respirator.
- Both methods must be performed by trained personnel following regulatory guidelines.
When is Fit Testing Required?
- Before initial use of a tight-fitting respirator.
- Annually as required by safety regulations.
- Whenever there is a change in face shape (e.g., weight change, dental work, facial surgery).
- When changing respirator models, brands, or sizes.
Important Reminders
- Fit testing is not the same as a user seal check done daily—both are essential.
- Be clean-shaven where the respirator makes contact with the face.
- Use the same PPE configuration (e.g., eyewear, headgear) as in actual work conditions.
- Document and retain fit test records as part of your health and safety program.
At GamaSafety, we ensure that every worker gets the protection they expect from their respirator. A proper fit test is the first step to safe breathing in hazardous work environments.

A respirator is only as effective as its fit. This GamaSafety session helps ensure your team breathes safely by making fit testing a top priority.
