Why Fire Extinguishers Matter
Fire extinguishers are a critical first response tool for small, contained fires. Knowing how to identify, access, and use them properly can prevent property damage, serious injuries, and save lives.
Types of Fire Extinguishers
- Class A: Ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, fabric.
- Class B: Flammable liquids like gasoline, oil, grease.
- Class C: Electrical fires (equipment, wiring).
- Class D: Combustible metals (magnesium, titanium).
- Class K: Kitchen fires (cooking oils, fats).
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher (PASS)
- Pull the pin to unlock the extinguisher.
- Aim low at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the handle to release the agent.
- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
Best Practices and Reminders
- Always keep a clear exit route behind you when using a fire extinguisher.
- Only attempt to extinguish small, contained fires.
- Report discharged or damaged extinguishers immediately.
