Why Natural Gas Lines Are Dangerous

Excavating near underground natural gas pipelines is one of the most high-risk operations in construction. A single strike can lead to explosions, severe injuries, evacuations, and death. Proper planning, location services, and controls are essential.

Before You Dig

  • Call or click before you dig—contact your local utility locator service.
  • Wait for utility marks and verify locations with updated site drawings.
  • Hold a pre-dig meeting with all involved workers and supervisors.
  • Use vacuum or hand digging when within 1 meter of a marked gas line.

Safe Excavation Practices

  • Follow all colored utility markings and flags on site.
  • Do not use heavy equipment until the gas line is fully exposed.
  • Keep open trenches protected and monitored at all times.
  • Use spotters, signage, and barriers to guide operations around gas lines.

In Case of a Strike or Leak

  • Stop all work immediately and evacuate the area.
  • Call 911 and the local gas utility provider.
  • Do not start vehicles or use electrical devices near the leak.
  • Secure the site until emergency crews arrive and clear the area.

At GamaSafety, we treat every excavation near a gas pipeline as a potential life-or-death situation. Training, planning, and attention to detail save lives—never dig blindly.
