Be Ready Before It Happens
Emergencies such as fires, medical incidents, gas leaks, and natural disasters can occur at any time. The key to limiting harm is preparation—knowing what to do, where to go, and who to contact. Workers must be trained to respond confidently and quickly.
Types of Worksite Emergencies
- Medical emergencies (heart attacks, injuries, unconsciousness).
- Fires or explosions.
- Hazardous material spills or gas leaks.
- Extreme weather or natural disasters (earthquakes, floods).
- Violence or security threats.
Elements of an Emergency Plan
- Clearly marked exits and evacuation routes.
- Designated assembly areas and headcount procedures.
- Assigned emergency coordinators and roles.
- Up-to-date first aid supplies and fire extinguishers.
- Training in CPR, fire response, and spill containment.
Worker Responsibilities
- Familiarize yourself with the site's emergency plan.
- Know the location of exits, extinguishers, and first aid kits.
- Follow instructions from emergency coordinators during incidents.
- Report unsafe conditions or near-miss events immediately.
- Participate in drills and training sessions.
