What is Defensive Driving?
Defensive driving means actively anticipating potential hazards and making safe decisions to avoid accidents—regardless of the behavior of other drivers. It's essential for company drivers, equipment operators, and all workers who drive to or from jobsites.
Common Risks on the Road
- Distracted or aggressive drivers around you.
- Sudden stops, merging traffic, and blind spots.
- Poor weather conditions or low visibility.
- Fatigue or stress affecting reaction time.
Defensive Driving Techniques
- Keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
- Use mirrors frequently and signal all lane changes.
- Maintain a safe following distance (3-5 seconds).
- Adjust your speed to match weather and traffic.
- Plan escape routes and stay out of blind spots.
Stay Focused and Alert
- Avoid distractions like phones, food, or loud music.
- Pull over if you feel drowsy or emotionally stressed.
- Stay calm in traffic and avoid confrontations.
- Always wear your seatbelt and enforce it for others.
