What Are Crush and Pinch Points?

Crush and pinch points are areas where a person or part of their body can be caught between moving objects, equipment, or machinery. These hazards can cause serious injuries such as fractures, amputations, or even fatalities if not identified and controlled properly.

Common Sources of These Hazards

  • Heavy equipment with hydraulic components or moving arms.
  • Materials being moved, stacked, or dropped unexpectedly.
  • Hand tools, doors, hatches, and automated machinery.
  • Rollers, pulleys, and conveyor systems.

Prevention and Safety Tips

  • Stay alert when working around moving machinery or materials.
  • Never place hands or feet where they can get trapped.
  • Use lockout/tagout procedures before maintenance or repair.
  • Keep body parts and clothing away from moving components.
  • Wear gloves, steel-toed boots, and other required PPE.

Safe Work Practices

  • Be aware of surroundings and communicate with coworkers.
  • Keep clear of suspended or shifting loads.
  • Use tools or push sticks instead of hands near pinch points.
  • Inspect equipment regularly for guards and warning labels.

At GamaSafety, recognizing and avoiding crush or pinch points is critical to protecting workers. Awareness and caution are the first lines of defense against preventable injuries on the job.
