Understanding Confined Spaces

Confined spaces are areas not designed for continuous occupancy and have limited entry or exit. They pose serious risks such as poor air quality, low oxygen levels, or the potential for engulfment and entrapment. Workers must follow strict procedures before entering these environments.

Examples of Confined Spaces

  • Manholes, tanks, silos, and storage bins.
  • Utility vaults and crawl spaces.
  • Pipelines and ducts.
  • Septic tanks and storm drains.

Hazards to Consider

  • Oxygen deficiency or toxic gases.
  • Flammable vapors or chemical exposure.
  • Mechanical equipment operating inside the space.
  • Entrapment or engulfment risks due to materials or design.

Safe Work Practices

  • Complete a confined space entry permit before work begins.
  • Test air quality continuously during entry.
  • Wear appropriate PPE including harnesses and respirators.
  • Use a trained attendant outside the space at all times.
  • Have a documented rescue plan in place and rehearsed.

At GamaSafety, confined space safety is a top priority. We ensure workers are trained, properly equipped, and follow procedures to eliminate risks before they enter any confined environment.
