Lifting with Chains and Slings
Chain and sling systems are essential for lifting heavy loads on job sites. However, incorrect use or damaged equipment can result in dropped loads, equipment failure, or worker injury. Proper inspection and rigging are key to safety.
Common Hazards
- Overloading beyond rated capacity.
- Twisting, kinking, or improper angle use.
- Using damaged, worn, or corroded slings.
- Incorrect hook-up or poor load balance.
Inspection Before Use
- Check for stretched links, broken wires, or excessive wear.
- Inspect hooks for cracks, bends, or damaged latches.
- Ensure identification tags are legible and attached.
- Remove defective slings from service immediately.
Safe Lifting Practices
- Use proper hitching techniques: vertical, choker, or basket.
- Never exceed the Working Load Limit (WLL).
- Lift slowly to avoid sudden shock loading.
- Keep all personnel clear of the suspended load.
At GamaSafety, safe rigging starts with proper training and awareness. Chains and slings are powerful tools—but only in the hands of trained and cautious workers.

Strong doesn’t mean safe. This GamaSafety session teaches workers how to inspect and operate chains and slings with confidence and control.
