Why Pre-Use Inspections Matter
Aerial lifts including scissor lifts and boom lifts must be inspected before every shift to ensure they are safe to operate. Failing to identify hazards like hydraulic leaks, faulty controls, or unstable tires can lead to serious accidents or fatalities.
Key Items to Inspect
- Visual check for leaks, cracks, or visible damage.
- Tires and wheels: wear, inflation, and securement.
- Guardrails, platform gates, harness anchor points.
- Control panels and emergency stop function.
- Hydraulic lines and battery condition.
Function Test Checklist
- Lift/lower and boom swing motion.
- Drive and steering capabilities.
- Outriggers and stabilizers (if applicable).
- Horn, lights, alarms, and limit switches.
- Ground controls override operation.
Safe Inspection Practices
- Use a written checklist don't rely on memory.
- Report and tag out defective equipment immediately.
- Never operate a lift if pre-use inspection is incomplete.
- Wear appropriate PPE during the inspection process.
At GamaSafety, aerial lift inspections are a legal and lifevsaving requirement. Take time before every shift to ensure your lift is ready and safe to use.

Every safe lift starts with a full inspection. This talk from GamaSafety outlines the steps crews must take to check aerial lift readiness before the first foot leaves the ground.
